Campaign against Kudimaari – From Gujarat to Punjab

March 8, 2008

Led by Swami Agnivesh, a “multi-faith pilgrimage of compassion for the unborn girl child” started from Tankara in Gujarat on Nov-01, 2005 and ended at Amritsar in Punjab on Nov-15, 2005. The pilgrimage was supported by various organizations such as Govt. of India, UNICEF, etc.

The choice of Amritsar as the culmination of the campaign is appropriate. Punjab has the highest male-female sex ratio in India. It would be naïve to believe that this skewed ratio is ‘natural’ and not (wo)man made. Whether this campaign has made a difference to kudimaari in Punjab remains to be seen. Regardless, the endeavor is commendable.
