Nanhi Chaan

April 22, 2009

Nanhi Chaan. A movement conceived by Harpal Singh, Chairman Ranbaxy Laboratories, and being spearheaded by Ms. Harsimrat Kaur in Punjab with support from SGPC.

harsimrat_badalMs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal is the wife of Surjit Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Dy. Chief Minister of Punjab and president of SAD party. Sukhbir Singh Badal is the son of Prakash Singh Badal, the current Chief Minister of Punjab. So the movement receives support from the State machinery as well.

Nanhi Chaan has been started as a movement to tackle the twin issues of Environmental damage and Female Feticide in Punjab. Conceptually, the idea holds lot of merit. Two important issues for the society brought together functionally and symbolically. Equate a woman with a tree: nurturing, caring and providing shade. This equivalence leads to another one of girl as a sapling, which leads to the formula, plant both saplings and girls. (Of course, some may question whether the symbolism instead reinforces the traditional gender roles of woman in the caring role. I believe it does but – in this case – in a positive manner. Why? Because a main reason for people wanting to have a son is their belief that sons look after their parents when the latter turn old. Daughters are seen as ‘paraya dhan’, to be ‘given away’ to her in-laws where she is supposed to rightfully belong. But if daughters too are perceived as trees — strong independent and offering support to their parents — it might help in reducing the preference-differences for sons-daughters.)

Punjab is plagued by both the problems: 1) female feticide leading to low female to male sex ratio, and 2) the Green Revolution leading to environmental damage. Nanhi Chaan aims to bring both these issues on the same platform.

Unfortunately, the various controversies surrounding the Badal family seem to be clouding the Nanhi Chaan movement too: many see it as a political stunt to get coverage for Ms. Harsimrat Kaur who had earlier denied it flatly (“I am not in the fray” for the LS elections). But it turns out that she is after all contesting the LS seat as a SAD-BJP candidate from Bhatinda in the forthcoming general elections. [update: she won the election and is now the MP from Bhatinda.]

The question is, should the fact that she has jumped into politics be held against the Nanhi Chaan movement she helped start and is working for? Much as I do not support the Badal family’s policies (or lack thereof) on the development  of Punjab (or lack thereof), Nanhi Chaan however seems to be a project that makes lot of common sense.  Full power to it.

Gurjinder Singh, I hope someone reading this blog delivers your message to Ms. Harsimrat Kaur, because this blog is not maintained by her. By the way, you can start serving the society by combatting this social evil of female feticide from wherever you are located. You could start with the Sikh diaspora in Spain. Best wishes.

A Mission To Cure Crying Wounds

I am jyoti bawa . I live in Amritsar, Punjab (India). I am a Punjabi writer. I am part of a social organization Punjabi Samvad’(regd) here.
It was 19th aug 2006 ……when my ears listened tragic news of the well at ‘patran’ (distt patiala) found with a number of female foetuses…… At the end news murmured a painful delivery to my soul. That after throwing in the well was not enough….. The doctor use to throw acid on them to remove their gender identification.

My soul started crying …….and out comes the pain in the shape of words.I have researched for months together and met with a number of victimized women. I have finalized it in the form of a story….. ‘khooh bolda hai’.I tried to go deeper in the darkness where the women is sleeping……I have just tried to lit up the darkness with the candle of awareness.

I feel that’ live theatre’ is a strong media to send a live message. I have decided to convert my words into a play. My counterpart ……amit bawa has written its sensitive & questioning poetry. That’s how came into existence a social punjabi play `khooh bolda hai’

Through the organization ‘Punjabi samvad’ we have produced & staged 10 shows of this play at different venues. In Nov 2008 it was selected by Punjabi sahitya academy New Delhi and we have staged it in ‘Sri Ram Art center, new Delhi. Lighting Candles….. Surjit patar, Dr.Satinder noor, Dr.Sukhpal, Parminderjit, Surjit kaur sond, Dr.Karnail Shergill, J.S.Brar……. witnessed the play and joins us on the path of darkness …….

Now we wish to share this message in the form of a book so that it travels to the distant shores. I know that I am not going to heal the wounds given by inhuman thinking but just want to be a ‘malham’ for the wounds.

Every ‘GENE’ improves its deficiency in its next birth. But I wish that this wound of female ………. given by ill human thinking …. Improves in the very present birth with such a genetical mental change that the female become aware of her being. Awakening is the only way left for her…….once she gets off her deep sleep and starts admitting herself as a human being …..ill thoughts ….wounding her being …….. Will have to die.

I need your help to publish this book, both as mental & finical support. Your organization is well known for its service to humanity. Your support will be our strength. We need your advertisement. One page in the book will be given to the message by your organization.

Can you be a part in our mission?

      Dear Jyotiji,
Here is the link for the contact details for Nanhi Chaan organization, which I believe you intended to contact.

      http://www.nanhichhaan.com/?p=Contact_Us

I am not part of that organization, just an individual blogger, drawing inspiration from efforts of individuals such as yourself with your plays and poetry. Do you have a video recording of your play? Would like to see it but am not in India right now. Also, could you write something more about your team and the play? I would like to cover you on this blog.

I hope you get a favorable response from folks at Nanhi Chhaan and that it helps you with your project on the book.

SHARING FEW WORDS FOR PUNJABI SAMVAD

Five years back a dream of amit&jyoti bawa appears in real shape. Touching the concrete ground of life &confronting all even and odds, they initiated a dialogue with life……. for life… and thus SAMVAD came into existence. Samvad is a dialogue between light and darkness…… not a fight. Its final aim is just to lighten up the darkness.
Samvad started its journey with the blessed innocence …….children ……….,providing them Punjab Natshala stage.Samvad saluted their natural talent, brought them back to their rich culture and specially provided them atmosphere which was free from pollution of unhealthy existing competition. Most of children were introduced to the stage for the first time.

Since year 2004 , Samvad worked with children&teenagers and produced memorable programmes…………..
Ik sham fullan de nam 2004
    Rangoli 2005
    Trail tupke 2006
    Anand utsav 2007
    Dancing dew drops 2008

In the year 2007, samvad took one more step and started a new dialogue with the darkness of female foeticide .Punjabi Samvad produced a play ‘Khooh bolda hai’, written by jyoti bawa. Its deep poetry which questioned everyone was written by amit bawa. Punjabi Samvad has staged its 9 live shows at different venues in amritsar.latest show was on 6th april 08 &………………the dialogue between light& darkness is going on .…………….

Recently Punjabi Samvad got a precious script on bhai kanhayia ji ‘s life and its real essence written by state and national awardee principal J . S. BAWA JI. Punjabi Samvad produced this play ‘ NA KOI VAIRI NA BIGANA.’ Directed by sensitive & immensely thoughtfull director Jyoti bawa . Its poetry was written by amit bawa..Nazam ‘PANI’ is a real picture of Bhai Kanhayia ji’s true soul.

    PunjabiSamvadScholorship2008

Now coming to the project PUNJABI SAMVAD SCHOLORSHIP .Samvad was eager to help those girls who were immensely talented but was unable to continue their study after 10th due to adverse conditions they are facing in their lives……. .So samvad decided to choose 10 girls to start with, providing them 1year sponsorship(school/college fees) for their study. These girls will be selected from a group of girls through a healthy competiton . The rounds in the competition was based on their will to get education, the spiritual&sensitive content in them, their natural talent . 12 girls got their sponsorship and all the girls in the competetion presented a culture event on the prestigious stage of Punjab Naatshala. To present a programme on this stage ,is an award in itself.
